This work by Joan Brossa graces the southwest façade of the new City Hall. Although the artist did not live to see it finished, it has become a new symbol of the city.

The work is comprised of an immense, slanted A, the first letter in the alphabet, the gateway to culture and knowledge.

A, the first letter in Catalan for municipal council (ajuntament), fondness (afecte), friendship (amistat), attention, animal... The A, “the most human symbol”, in Brossa’s words.

The concrete wall also features a large-scale image of a mullet and waves. The fish is a graphic element found on a civil emblem from the architrave of the Gothic Church built in 1498, and the waves, from a municipal seal dating to 1771.
